The Urban Movements Debate, from Right to the City to Commons: Limits and Possibilities

In the last 15 years, many cities in different parts of the world have witnessed various facets of neoliberal urban restructuring, from top-down gentrification projects, to mass housing projects causing a real estate bubble, and the eviction of present dwellers. The response has often been street protests and other activities initiated by the dwellers. The same sort of eviction processes have been seen across the world, followed by the widespread privatization of common lands. The Occupy Movements have reacted to the privatization of common lands in many cities of the world. This paper is an analysis of the theoretical background of such movements and a discussion of the limits and possibilities of the Right to the City (RTC) and Commons literature. The aim of the article is to contribute to the literature of critical urban studies by analyzing different interpretations and providing an overview of how these varied conceptualizations shape activism.

D�nyan�n farkl� yerlerinde bulunan bir�ok kentinde son onbe� y�lda, emlak balonu yaratan ve belli s�n�flar�n ya�am alanlar�ndan zorla yerinden edilmesi ile sonu�lanan tepeden inme soylula�t�rma projelerinden kensel d�n��m ad� alt�nda �retilen l�ks toplu konut projelerine kadar neoliberal kentsel yeniden yap�lanmaya �ahitlik edilmekte. Bu ge�ti�imiz s�re�, yo�un ve �rg�tl� bir zeminde kaybedenlerce sokak protestolar� ve �e�itli eylemliliklerle yan�tland�. Yerinden zorla edilmeleri takiben, �zelle�tirmelerle kamuya ait ortak alanlar�n da �itlenerek sermeyenin kullan�m�na a��ld�� bir s�rece tan�k olundu. Bu kez, bu alanlar�n kullan�c�lar�, ortak alanlar�n� geri talep etmek ve de sermayeye terk etmemek i�in bu s�reci i�gal et hareketleri ile yan�tlad�. Bu yaz�, d�nyan�n farkl� co�rafyalar�nda ya�anan bu s�recin �rg�tlenme pratiklerini teorik bir g�zle ele alarak, mevcut toplumsal hareketlerin imkan ve s�n�rl�l�klar�n� Kent Hakk� ve M��tereklerimiz literat�r� i�inden incelemektedir. Bu imkan ve s�n�rl�l�klar do�rultusunda, alternatif bir m�cadele yap�s�n�n olas�l�klar�n� tart��maya a�maktad�r. Yaz�, �e�itlenen eylem bi�imleri ve �rg�tlenme yap�s�n�n analizi ile ele�tirel kentsel �al��malar literat�r�ne katk� sa�lamay� hedeflemektedir.
