The human being is an integral part of his surroundings. The integration of the human being with his surroundings, physically brings out an activity. The activity that is derived from requirements, causes the creation of a product. In this aspect, every design product is a specialty of that particular design idea. For this special reason, the relationship between the person (as user of that space) and the product (seating element) provided for his use, has to be researched, to establish the correct design measurements and the best possible answer to his momentary situation and behaviour.
This is only possible by carefully examining that person’s (user of the product) structure and sufficiency, together with ergonomic and anthropometric specialties. When designing a seating element for a public space, we have to examine the individual as well as the public behaviour. Without careful consideration for local behaviour and characteristics, following the ergonomic and anthropometric rules of different socio-economic and cultural societies will only create products that are not suitable for our own socio-economic and cultural background. This problem can only be solved by establishing a special anthropometric data base for our country that could lead the way in design studies. İnsan çevresi ile bir bütündür. İnsanın çevresi ile yaptığı bu etkileşim, fiziksel olarak bir iş ortaya çıkarır.
Gereksinimlerden kaynaklanan bu iş, bir ürünün ortaya çıkmasına neden olur. Bu bağlamda her tasarım ürünü, tasarlanana özeldir. Bu özelliğinden dolayı tasarlanan nesneyi kullanacak olan kişinin (o çevreyi kullananın), kullanımına sunulan öge (oturma elemanı) ile ilişkilerinin incelenmesi, bu yolla onun (kişinin), o anlık durum ve tutumuna her açıdan en iyi yanıtı verebilecek tasarım ölçütlerinin belirlenmesi gerekmektedir. Bu da ancak, kişiyi (ürünü kullanıcıyı) onun yapıve yetilerini ergonomik ve antropometrik özelliklerini inceleyerek mümkünüdür. Kamusal çevreler için yapılan oturma elemanı tasarımında ise, incelenecek olan, bireyin yanısıra toplumun yapısıdır. Özelliklerimiz düşünülmeden farklı sosyoekonomik
ve kültürel toplumlar için yapılmış ergonomik ve antropometrik çalışmalar tasarımda ilke olarak kabul edildiği zaman, kendi sosyo-ekonomik ve kültürel yapımıza uygun olmayan ürünler ortaya çıkmaktadır. Bu sorun, ancak tasarım çalışmalarına yön vermek amacıyla ülkemize özel, antropometrik veri tabanının oluşturulması ile çözümlenebilir Anahtar Kelimeler: Ergonomi, Antropometri, Kamusal Alan, Oturma Elemanı.
